You will need to replace your diverter cartridge at some point which can be done while rebuilding the valve. The Zip Diverter Extractor tool can help remove the old one.

How to identify the correct Diverter/Flow Control replacement cartridges

If you have a small lever just underneath your shower valve handle that controls either –

the flow of water to the shower head on a shower only valve.

or 

is used to switch between shower head and tub spout in a combination tub/shower valve…

you have a diverter cartridge that requires replacement periodically. 

There are two different styles of diverter/flow control cartridges. 

Original and Versaflex. Unfortunately the only way to identify the correct style is by date of shower valve installation or by taking the face plate off and seeing which style matches up. 

Each style has a diverter cartridge for shower only or tub shower.

All shower only diverter cartridges are identified as black

All tub/shower diverter cartridges are identified as white
